04-17-09 - Crap! Sorry readers, for some reason this page got hosed when I did my BRT report. It basically stated my opinion against casinos charging parking for baseball, when they have no charged for parking with previous events that draw much more than 9,000 people. Source: RGJ

This is a bad move IMO. I understand why they are doing it, but $10 is too much in Reno ($5 is much more reasonable IMO). I will park at Circus/Silver Legacy/Eldorado for free and walk....the weather is supposed to be great anyway. :)

I think it's ridiculous that they would build a stadium and not include a parking complex. SK Baseball should have made parking a part of the design renderings so that this would not have even been an issue. I think the casinos are right for not wanting residents to use up their parking for 3-4 hours and not in their casinos gambling, that's their business! If I were in charge I would demolish the homeless center and turn it into a parking garage. It was a stupid idea to put the homeless center downtown, the last thing we need is homeless people harassing tourists and locals. That's why I don't go downtown. Thanks Bob! I'll vote for someone else next election.

I'm actually not surprised that the city approved a stadium without including parking. They always miss one minor thing that could turn into a huge thing.
Another thought on this, and Reno in general, is why don't we have any underground parking in Reno? Portland has a cool setup where about 10 blocks of the downtown underground is a parking garage. Why couldn't they do that here instead of using up valuable real estate?

I think it's good that they dont' provide parking. Many ballparks in vibrant neighborhoods in cities do not have any parking (Wrigley Field). If they did build parking, it would only encourage people to drive to the game and then directly home. This way, it encourages walking, biking, and transit. I hope that leads to more people supporting independent downtown business and leading to a new entertainment core around the field. I have mixed feelings about the casinos charging, but I think if they don't, visitors who are paying to stay there might not find parking, and that would be a shame. More parking would lead to more congestion in my opinion. Lets stop planning for cars and plan for people! Let's get out of cars and look around! Downtown has a lot to offer.

I agree $5 is about right. Market forces will determine it in the end. It's hard to park in a lot of great places...ever try to park a car near Fenway park ($25)? AT&T in SF? They charge you to park in the HUGE Dodger Stadium lot. You cant have a BBQ there either. The Reno whiners were having a field day on RGJ.com about this. What a bunch of babies. Having the park the downtown will win in the end.

I think it's fair to ask for money to park. The casino built the garages for people who stay in the hotel and gamble, not park and go to a baseball game. The whole idea of not having any new parking built in downtown was a crazy idea but I think Reno was just happy to get the park.

Hey Wiley N Reno, forget the winers and dont let them spoil this great stadium and team. These are the same winers who felt the stadium was a waste of money and probably felt the money should have been spent on housing the downtown bums and offering clean needles to the junkies. Be happy that this great idea came into fruitation and lets enjoy a great season.. First round of beer is on me. PLAY BALL!!!!!

I agree, we should relocate the homeless center from the downtown area. I think we need some type of parking accomodations in the downtown area for the ballpark.
The goal should be to clean up the downtown area in every way possible to attract locals and tourists.

I always read about how the Record St. Homeless shelter should be moved from downtown but never hear about "part 2". "Part 2" is the small matter of where it should go to.

I was there last night. Didn't see any major parking or congestion problems or hear anyone complain about it. If you build parking, people drive. If not, people who can walk, bike, bus, leaving plenty of parking for those who have to drive. It was a great night and it was nice to see so many people out and about after the game, too. That's what revitalizes an area, not more parking.
