Wild Wheels: Art Car Day
When: 8/28/2010 - 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM - Saturday Arts and Culture
Where: National Automobile Museum - 10 South Lake Street, Reno
An eye-popping Art Car that started out as a VW but now literally features the world (among other things) and a film called "Automorphosis" will be showcased at "Wild Wheels: Art Car Day" at the National Automobile Museum, The Harrah Collection, in downtown Reno on Sat., Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special two-for-one admission prices are part of "Wild Wheels: Art Car Day."
"Oh My God!" was the first Art Car created by artist and filmmaker Harrod Blank. He has been continually improving it for 29 years. Blank said he was embarrassed by the bland all-white Volkswagen he had at age 16, so he painted a rooster on the driver's door. The move was the springboard to his career building art cars and documenting the Art Car movement.
Adorned with an ever-changing array of objects that Blank says helps him express his individuality, "Oh My God! is definitely a head-turner. This special exhibit is a must see.
The art film "Automorphosis," also created by Blank, will be shown at 1 p.m. in the Museum Theater. It is included with the special two-for-one admission price.
If you could morph your car into a mobile work of art and drive it down the road for all to see, what would it look like? What would the world think of you and how would you be changed by it?
Creators of cars featured in the film provide their own individual answers to those questions. Blank's Camera Van is featured in the film along with a fork-and-spoon-covered "Peace Car" created by spoon bender Uri Geller; Howard Davis' obsession-driven-telephone collection and Leonard Knight a religious folk artist who's painted his vehicles as a testament to his faith.
Opening remarks before "Automorphosis" will be made by filmmaker Blank who will also take questions from the audience. Blank will also sign copies of his books.
Hands-on Fun
Patrons will be encouraged to draw on their own creativity by designing their own work of art using chalk on a "car."
A mini art car exhibit will be featured in the Museum parking lot to provide an up-close experience during "Wild Wheels: Art Car Day" at the National Automobile Museum located at 10 S. Lake Street.

Stone Foxes
When: 8/28/2010 - 9:00 PM - Saturday Concerts
Where: Biggest Little City Club - 188 California Avenue, Reno
Genre: Rock
It’s not just great song writing, warm guitars, a nut-tight rhythm section, and the occasional blues harp riffs that make The Stone Foxes’ second album, Bears & Bulls, so good; the Bay Area four-piece consisting of brothers Shannon and Spence Koehler, Aaron Mort, and Avi Vinocur have captured something else on this recording that makes the whole thing huge, and very, very cool.
Listeners sense it right away. There’s a genuineness here that’s rare and refreshing, and it’s something that can’t be achieved simply by grabbing a couple of vintage axes and plugging into a stack of tube amps. Because while The Stone Foxes may be influenced by the greats of the late 60s and early 70s like The Band, Bob Dylan, and Led Zeppelin, they never sound like they’re trying to be anything but exactly who they are. But then they don’t need to: their style of blues-rock stands on its own.
