The 2014 elections are just around the corner if you go by the political calendar, and the primaries are just 8 weeks away or so. The reality has set in that we have 20 candidates for what is undeniably the most important political race during one of Reno's most crucial moments in history. As we slowly rise out of the ashes of the worst real estate crash and recession to hit Reno in my lifetime, the next mayor will be the face and leader of this city and, as guest blogger Abbi Whitaker so eloquently puts it in this guest piece, help push Reno over the hill to success, or pull it back to failure.

Chuys Deli to Join Sticks Project

Some quick news: Looks like a permit was pulled for 760 South Virginia, to join the Sticks Project, presumably next to Chuy's Mexican Chicken will be Chuy's Deli. The permit's for $160,000.

Pies with a Purpose Fundraiser

Pies with a Purpose is a culinary showcase in support of The Eddy House, where Downtown Reno's top chefs, including Larry Dunning of Bowl, Joseph Bell of Wild River Grille, as well as chefs from Noble Pie Parlor, The Jungle, Brewer's Cabinet, Jax on the Tracks, Homage Bakery and more come together to support the Eddy House. Vote For Local Band Sil Shoda In National Contest

Vote for local favorites Sil Shoda in a Competition called "Hard Rock Rising" run by the Hard Rock Cafe. They recently competed in Lake Tahoe and won our region! Out of 12000 submissions world-wide they are one of 80 bands left in the competition. Voting has now gone to the "Global Stage" and is done via Facebook. Voting went live on April 28th and finishes on May 7th. The winner gets an all expenses trip paid to go to Rome Italy to play in front of 40,000 people and the two runners up will receive $10,000 in music equipment. So let's support our local talent and get these guys to Rome!

Since the formation of the band in late 2008, the boys in Sil Shoda have been up and down the West Coast playing with such acts as: Buck Cherry, Hell Yeah, Royal Bliss, Halestorm, Rev Theory, Hurt, Big Elf, Since October, Divide the Day, Puddle of Mud, Queensryche, All That Remains, Steel Panther, Bobaflex, Framing Hanley, Eddie Money, as well as many Extremely talented local and regional bands. Band members consist of: Robert James-Vocals/Strings, Anthony Vairetta-Backing Vocals/Lead Guitar, David Kellers-Backing Vocals/Bass Guitar, Scott Curtis - Drums. Sil Shoda Released their full length debut album "Aces and Eights" in June of 2011.

Great Western Marketplace Calls for Artists, Entrepreneurs

A new regional concept in retail will be revealed when the Great Western Marketplace opens its doors this summer. An array of 400 varied local and regional vendors, food purveyors, artisans and crafters can now fulfill their entrepreneurial vision – without the usual overhead involved. Great Western Marketplace (GWM) will host a two-day preview and leasing opportunity event for local businesses and potential entrepreneurs on Friday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many of the committed vendors will also be present at the preview event.
