Downtown Embraces Holiday Spirit Tuesday

by Mike Van Houten / Nov 19, 2012

City of Reno officials will flick the switch on Reno’s holiday tree on the evening of Tuesday, November 20, signaling the official beginning of the holiday season. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. on the City Plaza. The public is invited to enjoy this great tradition featuring carolers, ice skating, and a community celebration. Following the tree lighting, a skating exhibition by the Tahoe Snowflakes will take place on the Rink on the River and then the Rink will open for the public. Skaters can receive a free skate rental by donating a new hat, mittens, or scarf to the Salvation Army.

Admission fees for the rink are:

• Teens/adults (ages 13-54) = $7.50

• Children (ages 3-12) = $5.50 • Seniors (55+) = $5.50

The City Plaza and Ice Rink are located at the corner of First and Virginia Streets in Downtown Reno along the Truckee River. A detailed schedule of skating times and a list of admission fees can be found here.

The event schedule is as follows:

• Billinghurst Middle School Choir sings carols starting at 4:30 p.m.

• Tree lights flipped on by City officials at 5:15 p.m.

• Skating Exhibition by Tahoe Snowflakes followed by the opening of the Rink on the River from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. (weather & ice conditions permitting)
