New Mixed Use Project Begins Construction

by Mike Van Houten / Feb 19, 2015

A new mixed use project on the corner of 10th and Virginia will plant the seed for a much-needed university district between UNR and downtown, and bring a little of bit of Midtown north.

The project is named Urban@University, and the developer is Urban Real Estate Investments, the same duo who developed the wildly successful mixed use project at Riverside and Washington where the Hub, Beaujolais Bistro, Dorinda's Chocolates and more call home. Urban@University is an adaptive reuse project located directly across from Manzanita Hall. Similar in many ways to their project on Riverside, they are taking three old buildings and bringing them together with common walkways and shared patios and amenities and creating synergies between the tenants who occupy the spaces.

Paddy Egan, one of the partners involved, says "We are trying to create a more diversified and authentic 'university experience' than currently exists for students, university professors and professionals in the area. A place where people can enjoy the university area outside of a bar. It will allow people to enjoy a great sandwich, coffee, smoothie/juice and other services in a creative and fun environment- without necessarily being IN the student union ON campus."

The City of Reno and the University have been eager to turn Virginia Street from 8th Street to 10th Street into a University District that appeals to UNR's thousands of students....a university district which one would find at almost any large university around the country (off-campus-but right next to campus) that exhibits the historical character of the institution and its surroundings. This project is a step in the right direction.

The tenants will include The Hub, SUP (a second location), a cold-pressed juice bar, a bicycle shop, and they still have about 1,000 square feet available for the right tenant!.This project has been a few years in the making, and they are starting construction immediately!

I'm honestly more excited about this than I have been for any project in a long time. This is so incredibly long overdue, and is hopefully the beginning of a new U-district.

YES! I wonder what the University thinks though.. while attending there I always got the feeling that they didn't care for students having "off-campus" activities, almost like they wanted it to be a self-contained bubble away from Reno itself.

H.E. This was Dr. Glick's vision to have businesses and the University be as one. I am very excited to see this happen!

What is the street address of this house? I think my Grandmother owned it as a boarding house for college students in the late 30's. Thanks.
