Entrepreneurial Spirit Downtown

Downtown Reno Continues Tech Trend with Startup-Weekend

While Apple's presence downtown seems to be perpetually delayed, there are plenty of other reasons to get excited about downtown's tech and office sector. Reno Collective is moving right into the core of the city at Arlington Towers (along with two other tenants), Rogue Gaming Studio is opening a 6,000+ square foot office downtown, office vacancy rates downtown are now less than in South Reno, and Startup Weekend Reno is on the horizon, happening at the end of this month.

In case you didn't notice, Reno has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, now magnified with low lease rates and startup costs. So it's the perfect time for an event like this to come along. What is Startup Weekend in Reno, you ask? It's the opportunity for local entrepreneurs to start a business in 54 hours in a room of designers, developers, and enthusiasts. The event takes place February 22-24 in the old Southside School building at 190 East Liberty Street.

During the concept-to-launch crunch weekend, local CEO’s, founders, and startup veterans will be on hand to provide insight and expertise on the fast-paced world of technology startups in order to motivate and educate Startup Weekend Reno participators. “This is going to be a great opportunity for anyone who wants to build a business but has no solid starting point,” said Daniel Herr, Startup Weekend Reno Organizer. “There will be some brilliant entrepreneurs around to give advice and keep the momentum going.” On Friday February 22, registered attendees will take to an open mic inside the weekend’s venue, the Southside School, and begin pitching ideas to the group in 60 seconds or less. Ideas are typically web and mobile applications, and once pitched are voted on to create teams for top ideas.

The weekend is spent making the ideas come to life, and a plethora of resources and advice from regional entrepreneurs is offered to participants. Meals and coffee are included in the ticket price.

The deadline to complete is Sunday evening, when the results are presented and prizes such as office space, marketing support, and hosting are awarded.

Startup Weekend Reno will take place inside the Southside School, 190 East Liberty St., starting at 6:30 pm on Friday February 22. Details for Startup Weekend Reno and the preview events can be found on the website at www. www.reno.startupweekend.org.
