Beach Hut Deli to open in CommRow in May

by Mike Van Houten / Mar 30, 2012

In some quick CommRow news, Beach Hut Deli is scheduled to open in May and is currently under construction along with the rest of most of the first floor of CommRow. Hotel is not scheduled to open until 2013.

Commrow is a property that I am starting to believe is in trouble. I mean the delay with the hotel is one thing, but the vision of this place is confusing. I mean where is the focus, and where is the marketing department. Sure the shows are good in all, but the vision is lacking I think from them.

The vision for the property left when Fernando Leal was escorted from the building and told never to come back. Without a vision for the end goal, you'll have a young marketing department that will chase their tails trying to keep up with all the marketing for cheap music acts to attract a drinking crowd. Is it any wonder they're eliminating all of the in-house eateries in favor of owners who know how to run a food establishment? I hope for the sake of our community it's not doomed - but the hotel won't open for some time (if this year), and the place will be an attraction only - not a destination for locals and visitors. Opportunity lost.

Poor Nando, so misunderstood. Surrounded by Philistines and naysayers his seeds of genius can find no fertile ground. Once again a victim of circumstance and adrift on the sea of mediocrity.

I truly wish I understood the business plan for the hotel. If I as a periodic visitor get free room offers at Harrah's, where there is a coffee shop for breakfast, and a steak house and some entertainment, why would I pay for a room at the Row? I'm not close to being a top tier player's club member, yet there are free or cheap rooms for me at Harrah's, Atlantis, or the Sienna. Are just the rock wall climber atheletes the demo who will rent the rooms at the Row? But those people are campground types, or pick-up truck with camper shell travelers, I think. So then, who rents the rooms? Business travelers? The Atlantis business connection is a pretty good deal for them, in my opinion, with business facilities and office services included. Companies usually pick up the cost for the employee on temporary duty somewhere, or for an executive on a business trip. So I am missing the concept for this hotel -- it may be there, but I just don't see it.

Larry's post hits the button exactly. I mean the few times I was in their post leal management, it just felt different in their because the property for one felt somewhat naked without the pet area and the other eateries. Also I feel the property is like a bunch of random colors painted together without a purpose, and I feel these changes are just making the property look like crap to be honest with you. I think we may be looking at a property that is on a death watch, and I feel could be closed this year.

As sad as it makes me to see CommRow have made a 180' turn from it's original plan and vision, I'm still happy to see the doors open and lights on. Fernando, whom I still support no matter what, may be gone but he put up a great thing. He did what he said he'd do, build the world's tallest climbing wall. No matter what happens with CommRow, that wall will make it a valuable asset. To which developer? That remains to be seen, but we will see what happens. Closure I don't think is an option, whomever is running it now seems to have the capital to keep it going. Go in there now, they've got the place ripped apart, AGAIN. Design wise it's horrible, but it could be worse. It's sort of bland, but it's sort of industrial, which is supposed to be bland. So it goes hand in hand, and I think that was the point all along. Fernando had hoped to broaden Downtown's resort options with a no smoking, no gaming property targeting families, climbers and nightlife enthusiasts, the response was mixed. I feel marketing has and will continue to be a struggle for CommRow. But I have to give it to them, if they had more time than what they were given, CommRow would've achieved it's goal. They had a great team lined up to get it done, it was just timing. I saw how it went, I was going to work there. An HR department was NON EXISTENT. They simply didn't have the time. Now that it's open, it's been constantly tweaked. Still is, we'll see how these latest renovations pan out. But as much as I'd hoped the hotel would open this year, they can't add 200 rooms to a product that still doesn't know what it wants to be. So I'll give them time, I miss Fernando and the old gang but I root for this new one in the best interest of our community, it'll pan out. Just needs the time it never had.

Matt, I respect your undying loyalty to Fernando Leal. I know when you have declared this Commrow thing to be a loss, it is indeed dead. I agree that timing had a SMALL part in the demise of Commrow, moreso I think the lack of management and implementation of the grand opening. The thing hasn't even made it through summer tourist season yet and it has been written off by just about everyone. I've blathered on since I first heard about this project on it's unavoidable failure, and I don't like to kick people when they're down, as I am sure Nando is right now, so I will not add any more opinion on the project's lameness. I do agree it is nice to see the place is open. Who knows, perhaps DRW will make enough money renting out the Primadonna and Old Reno casinos (they are asking amazing prices for leases on these buildings) to keep the Commrow alive until someone purchases it.
