New Bar Headed to Center of Downtown?

by Mike Van Houten / Apr 1, 2011

A new bar license is on the agenda for 195 North Virginia St. This building is located on the corner of 2nd Street and Virginia Street, and from what I can tell, is the closed-down tourist shop across the street from Beverly's Gifts. The one in the semi-restored building that still has all its inventory in the ground level.
Hmmm intriguing. The applicant is John Iliescu/John Iliescu Jr., a guy who owns decent-sized chunks of downtown Reno. Will be interesting to see what he does with this property. It's a cool building.

just what downtown needs, another bar! Now if we can just get a few more tattoo shops...

I'd rather have a bar that's contributing to the tax base than an empty building that's just taking up space and acting as an eyesore.

And the building will look cooler without the big “Loans” sign on the corner. I am happy any time a loan, pawn, liquor or motel sign is removed from downtown. Good restaurants and bars/nightclubs are key ingredients to a vibrant downtown tourism core. If downtown starts filling up with reputable businesses and clientele, the shady bars, liquor stores and riff raff will be driven out.

If there is something new going in that God-awful, 1966-era, storefront then I will patronize it!

This might be a knee jerk reaction to the rumored moratorium in the downtown area. Interesting to see where the parking will be located...

I see there's also a notice posted on the window of the former sub shop on W. First at Arlington (across from Java Jungle) announcing the application for a license for a full liquor bar, no cabaret. Any other detail, Mike?
