Great Western Marketplace Calls for Artists, Entrepreneurs

by Mike Van Houten / May 1, 2014

A new regional concept in retail will be revealed when the Great Western Marketplace opens its doors this summer. An array of 400 varied local and regional vendors, food purveyors, artisans and crafters can now fulfill their entrepreneurial vision – without the usual overhead involved.

Great Western Marketplace (GWM) will host a two-day preview and leasing opportunity event for local businesses and potential entrepreneurs on Friday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many of the committed vendors will also be present at the preview event.

Situated directly along the Interstate 80 corridor, GWM is easily accessible for both residents and visitors alike. Inside, amidst spacious eight-foot aisles are customizable, permanent vendor studios starting in area from 10 feet by 10 feet, or 12 feet by 12 feet, with customizable variations available from there. Leases start at $572 per month.

Included within the monthly lease are amenities often not provided by building owners such as general utilities; Wi-Fi; 24-hour, state-of-the-art security; 24-hour back-up generator; prominent presence on the GWM website; additional storage facilities available for inventory; inclusion in their mobile app; ample, free parking within the lot featuring 1,500 spaces; and an on-site market manager. No additional commissions or common area maintenance fees are required from vendors, who are responsible for the upkeep of their individual studios.

Whether an extension of an existing business or a new retail endeavor, vendors are asked to provide their City of Reno business license; federal tax I.D. and employer identification number; state tax I.D.; liability insurance; business website; and, if applicable, health certificate for food merchants.

From chefs to farmers, artists to inventors, the GWM will provide consumers an indoor venue to peruse a wide variety of goods and services provided by independent business owners, versus retail complexes usually comprised of big box stores.

The first indoor retail experience of its kind in the region, the 167,000-square-foot GWM will be open through every season, Friday through Sunday, driving traffic to the merchants on the optimal retail days to maximize their profits. Additionally, plans for weekly live entertainment and both indoor and outdoor events are underway.
