California Avenue
Welcome to California Avenue, Reno! Nicknamed, 'Cal Ave', California Avenue and its surrounding area is just south of the business district. The heart of California Avenue is from Virginia Street to about Arlington, and beyond that it turns into a beautiful neighborhood with historic mansions.
Cal Ave has its own official district recognized by the City, and its own merchant's association. Cal Ave is a mix of businesses and a few residences as well, including California Avenue Apts, a building with a lot of history. California Avenue is home to an array of locally owned retail outfits, and provides some of the most unique shopping in Reno. Let's take a closer look at Cal Ave below, and underneath that are some great pics taken by a frequenter of this site, Justin Waters. I also added the ability to comment to this page below. Tell me what your favorite Cal Ave business is!

California Ave. stores such as the Kalifornia Jean Bar, Park and Live with Grace are overcharging the people who stop there to the point of gouging them. You can get the same jeans and tees at Macy's and many of our local resale shops for less then half the price!! We say shop local but elsewhere.Unless you just want to throw money away.

A few days ago, I was taking a walk in Carson along their Curry Street Promenade, and it got me to thinking, if Carson City can have a gaslamp district, why can't Reno? It would bring a nostalgic charm to Cal Ave, and would compliment the architecture already in place. As I envision it, the lamps could be placed from Virginia to Arlington, though there's nothing stopping that from going all the way to Newlands Circle along Mansion Row.

The products sold at Kalifornia Jean Bar are unique to the area and are by no means over-priced. Prices are based on an industry standard which is followed across the country by fine boutiques everywhere. While Macys might carry a few of the same items, (very few), their prices on these items are almost exact (sometimes slightly more). As for resale stores being less, that is obvious! It is almost a ridiculous comparison. It is like saying that they should sell their clothing for less than they payed for it! Give it a break! You don't honestly compare items priced at garage sales with new items in a store, do you? That would be silly. Have a nice day.

I think that the Kalifornia Jean Bar, The Park, and Liv with Grace are all amazing stores for everyone out there. The employees are very kind to you and you find what you are looking for almost EVERY time. And even if you don't, the person who helped you would place an order, and would get your number so you they can contact you when whatever you were looking for comes in. I would totally suggest to go to one of the places on California Avenue for a gift, or even just to go shopping for you. And keep your eye out because they will be opening another store on the Avenue, Velvet Soul. It will be a mens store (since the Kalifornia Jean Bar is mostly women's, but still some mens). This new store will continue their line of stores sweeping California Avenue, in Reno Nevada. So go to the Kalifornia Jean Bar for any of your fashionista needs!

I would like to give a big congratulations to the Kalifornia Jean Bar. I have never been so impressed with a store's service as I have with the jean bar. The employees spent a great deal of time making sure my jeans fit me correctly ( I think I tried like 20 pair on and they were so patient!!). I used to shop at Macys because I figured I was getting a better deal. However, I was wrong. For comparable prices and unparalleled service I found my favorite pair of jeans and new favorite store. Thanks Kalifornia Jean Bar and the wonderful people there (especially Christy and Mike Hall!! And of course, their cute little daughter that comes to work with them every day!!!!!)

I have seen nothing posted regarding the opening of the 'Rubicon Deli' (in the same building right behind St. James Infirmiry). One of Reno's best sandwiches by far. Everyone needs to have a taste!!

The best store by far on Cal Ave is the bead shop! I'm from California and have never been in a bead store this good - check it out. Its on Plumas and California Ave.

I noticed this morning there is new signage for the former Satellite location. It's now called The Biggest Little City Club. If it isn't open yet it looks like it will be real soon.

I've lived in Reno for most of my life (twenty two years and counting) and never, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER have I heard anyone who lives in Reno refer to California Avenue as anything other than just that. All this 'Cal Ave' business is rather ridiculous and makes people who actually shop and support businesses on and around the district look like doofusses. Just saying. ~Austin

I think that "Cal Ave" is a great place, and I've been here since birth. Austin, you are entitled to your opinion, but those of us who love and support Cal Ave, including all of the businesses that continue to blossom on the street (Biggest Little City Club, Washoe Wine Co, 214 Furniture Store, etc) will probably keep calling it that!

Anybody heard what is going on with the bike path down Cal Ave? It was in the Gazette several months ago as planned development for 2009?

In my opinion, the California Ave area offers excellent choices in dining and entertainment...

I think Wells Fargo Bank deserves a mention.

The link for Yoga Shack appears to route to a location in London????

I think that should be Studio Eight Yoga. Perhaps a re-name?

Isn't Ventrcek Advertising Design, located on California Avenue? Below the Cheeseboard and Wine Seller? They are a terrific graphic design studio - get them on the list!

If you want terrific art, great choices at affordable prices, go to Reno's largest art gallery - Art Source Gallery located at South Virginia & South Meadows Marketplace. They also do custom framing and have a huge selection of framing. I can't believe you don't have them on the list.

I find it quite believable, since Art Source is in a completely different part of town. This page just lists businesses near California Avenue.
